nitrofuantoin
Nitrofurantoin

Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic used to treat and prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs), including cystitis. When you take it, your body filters it out of your blood and sends it straight into your urine. That means the medicine builds up right where the infection lives and gets to work fast.

It does not work for infections outside the urinary tract. It only treats the bladder, kidneys, and the connected waterworks.

This is a prescription-only medicine. Our clinician will check it's right for you before we dispense it.

<details>

How to use

Always take nitrofurantoin with food or milk. This helps your body absorb the medicine and cuts the chance of feeling sick.

For treating an active UTI, the usual dose is either 50mg or 100mg four times a day for 3 to 7 days, or 100mg slow-release capsules twice a day for 3 to 7 days. Your clinician will tell you which dose and how long.

For preventing UTIs from coming back, the usual dose is 50mg or 100mg once a day at bedtime.

Swallow the tablets or capsules whole with water. Do not crush or chew them.

If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for your next one. In that case, skip the missed dose and carry on as normal. Do not take two doses at once.

Finish the full course, even if you feel better before it ends. Stopping early gives the bacteria a chance to come back.

Your urine may turn dark yellow or brown while you take nitrofurantoin. This is normal and will clear once you finish the course.

</details>

<details>

Main Ingredients

The active ingredient is nitrofurantoin. It is available in 50mg and 100mg strengths as tablets, capsules, or slow-release capsules. The slow-release form (sometimes branded as Macrobid) releases the medicine steadily, which means fewer doses each day.

Other ingredients vary by manufacturer but typically include lactose, maize starch, magnesium stearate, and talc. If you have a lactose intolerance, let our clinician know before starting.

</details>

<details>

Side Effects & Cautions

The most common side effect is an upset stomach, including nausea, loss of appetite, and diarrhoea. Taking it with food helps keep this in check. Dizziness and drowsiness can also occur, so take care if you drive or use machinery.

Serious side effects are uncommon but important. Nitrofurantoin can sometimes affect the lungs, causing coughing, shortness of breath, and fever. This can happen within the first week or develop slowly over longer courses, especially in older patients. If you notice any breathing problems, stop taking it and contact a doctor straight away.

It can also affect the liver. If your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow (jaundice), stop the medicine and get medical help.

Numbness or tingling in your hands or feet can signal nerve damage. Tell your doctor if you notice this.

Allergic reactions are rare. If you get sudden swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or you struggle to breathe, call 999 immediately.

Who should not take it

You should not take nitrofurantoin if your kidneys are not working well (your doctor can check this), if you are allergic to nitrofurantoin or any of its ingredients, or if you are in the final stages of pregnancy (at term, during labour and delivery). It is also not suitable for babies under 3 months old.

Can you take it during pregnancy?

Nitrofurantoin is generally considered safe in the first and second trimesters. However, it should be avoided near your due date (from about 36 weeks onwards) as it may affect the baby's red blood cells. Our clinician will advise you.

Can you drink alcohol?

You can drink in moderation. Alcohol does not stop nitrofurantoin from working. But heavy drinking can make nausea and dizziness worse, so keep it sensible.

Other medicines

Antacids containing magnesium trisilicate can stop nitrofurantoin from working properly. Do not take them at the same time. If you are on any other medicines, let our clinician know so they can check for interactions.

Long-term use

If you take nitrofurantoin for several months to prevent recurring UTIs, your doctor will monitor you for any effects on the lungs, liver, blood, and nerves.
