About this product
Amorolfine is a medicated nail lacquer that treats fungal nail infections. You paint it directly onto the infected nail once a week. The lacquer dries to form a film that holds the medicine against the nail surface, letting it soak through to the fungus underneath.
Amorolfine is best suited for mild to moderate infections that affect the upper half and edge of the nail. If the infection has spread across most of the nail or reached the root, you may need oral antifungal tablets instead. Our clinician can advise which route suits your case.
This is a prescription-only medicine. Our clinician will check it's right for you before we dispense it.
How to use
Treat each infected nail once a week. Before applying, remove any old lacquer using one of the cleaning swabs provided. Then file down the infected area of the nail with the nail file from the pack. This roughens the surface and helps the lacquer soak in.
Dip the applicator into the bottle. Do not wipe off the excess on the rim. Apply the lacquer evenly over the entire nail surface. Let it dry for about 3 minutes.
After the lacquer has dried, clean the applicator with the same swab you used on your nails. Do not touch the freshly treated nails with the swab. Close the bottle tightly. Throw the swab away carefully as it is flammable.
Once dry, the lacquer is not affected by soap and water. You can wash your hands and feet as normal. If you work with solvents like white spirit or paint thinner, wear waterproof gloves to protect the lacquer on your fingernails.
You can apply cosmetic nail varnish on top, but wait at least 10 minutes after the medicated lacquer has dried. Remove all nail varnish before your next weekly application. Do not use artificial nails while on treatment.
If you forget a week, do not worry. Apply it as soon as you remember and carry on with your weekly routine from there.
Do not stop using it until the infection has cleared and healthy nail has fully grown back. Stopping early lets the fungus come back and may cause it to become resistant to the treatment.
Main Ingredients
Each millilitre of lacquer contains 50mg of amorolfine (as amorolfine hydrochloride). Amorolfine is a morpholine antifungal that blocks two enzymes the fungus needs to build its cell membrane. It is effective against dermatophytes, yeasts, and several types of mould.
Other ingredients include ammonio methacrylate copolymer, triacetin, butyl acetate, ethyl acetate, and ethanol. The lacquer contains alcohol, which may cause a burning feeling if it touches broken or irritated skin.
Side Effects & Cautions
Side effects are uncommon and usually limited to the nail and surrounding skin. Rare effects include nail discolouration, brittle or loose nails, and a burning sensation or redness around the nail (contact dermatitis).
Serious allergic reactions are very rare. If your face, lips, tongue, or throat swell, or you develop difficulty breathing or a severe rash, stop using the lacquer, remove it with a cleaning swab, and get medical help straight away.
Do not apply the lacquer to the skin around the nail. If it gets into your eyes, nose, or mouth, rinse well with water immediately.
Who should not use it
Do not use amorolfine if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients. It is not recommended for children under 18. If you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system, speak with our clinician first, as you may need a different treatment approach.
Can you use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Amorolfine is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Speak with our clinician for advice on managing fungal nails during this time.
Other medicines
There are no known interactions with other medicines. You can use amorolfine alongside other treatments you may be taking.
Tips for faster results
Keep your nails trimmed short. File down any thickened areas. Use a separate file and clippers for infected nails and do not share them. Treat any athlete's foot at the same time, as the skin infection often feeds the nail infection. Wear breathable shoes and clean cotton socks. Keep your feet dry.
