Ezinelle 1.5mg Levonorgestrel
About this product

Ezinelle is an emergency hormonal contraceptive (EHC) designed to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or the failure of a primary contraceptive method (such as a split condom or missed birth control pill).

How it works

Ezinelle contains a synthetic version of the hormone progesterone. Its primary function is to prevent or delay the release of an egg from the ovary (ovulation).

  • The Window of Efficacy: It is most effective when taken as soon as possible, ideally within 12 hours, and no later than 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex.

  • Mechanism: By delaying ovulation, the medication ensures that any sperm present in the reproductive tract cannot meet and fertilise an egg.

  • Important Note: Ezinelle is not an "abortion pill." It will not interrupt an existing pregnancy or work if an egg has already been fertilised and implanted in the womb.

Main ingredients

  • Active Ingredient: Levonorgestrel 1.5mg.

  • Excipients: The tablet contains lactose monohydrate, maize starch, povidone, colloidal anhydrous silica, and magnesium stearate.

  • Allergy Warning: If you have a known intolerance to certain sugars (specifically lactose), you should consult your pharmacist before use.

Side effects

Most women do not experience serious side effects, but because of the hormonal shift, you may notice the following:

  • Very Common: Nausea (feeling sick), lower abdominal pain, tiredness, and headaches.

  • Menstrual Changes: Your next period may be earlier, later, heavier, or more painful than usual. You may also experience irregular bleeding or spotting until your next cycle begins.

  • Common: Dizziness, breast tenderness, or diarrhoea.

Cautions and warnings

  • Vomiting: If you vomit within 3 hours of taking the tablet, the medication may not have been absorbed. You must contact your pharmacist or doctor immediately to take another dose.

  • Medical Conditions: Ezinelle may be less effective for women with severe malabsorption syndromes (such as Crohn’s disease) or those with severe liver dysfunction.

  • Drug Interactions: Certain medications, such as those for epilepsy (e.g., carbamazepine), tuberculosis (e.g., rifampicin), or HIV, can reduce the effectiveness of Levonorgestrel. Always disclose your current medications during your consultation.

  • Existing Pregnancy: Ezinelle should not be taken if you are already pregnant. If you suspect you may be pregnant despite taking the pill (e.g., your period is more than 5 days late), you must take a pregnancy test.

  • Breastfeeding: Small amounts of the hormone can pass into breast milk. To minimise exposure, it is recommended to take the tablet immediately after breastfeeding and avoid nursing for at least 8 hours afterwards.
